Animal Health Diagnostic Center - Sample Submission
Johne's Testing Samples

For all herd sampling, please contact the laboratory at 607-266-8965 or 607-266-8963 (fax) for consultation and scheduling of sample submission. Contact the lab also for forms, sample containers, and mailers.

Sampling for Johne's Testing
The animal's sample number (column to the left of the animal ID column on accession form) must be placed on all blood tubes and fecal containers with a waterproof marker.
Circle the sample number on the container to distinguish it from the animal's ID.
A barn ID will also be helpful to keep samples properly identified.
On the accession form, please specify the exact name of the testing option.
Use same animal ID from test to test so we can track progress of animals.
For proper test interpretation, a brief Johne's history must be provided along with date of birth and species being tested.

Fecal Culture
All herds planning to submit fecal samples must first submit a Johne’s testing reservation form, which can be downloaded here: Johne's Reservation Form
If you are submitting more than 75 individual fecal cultures or 15 pooled fecal cultures at once, or for any regular submissions of many samples, please contact the Johne’s lab by phone, fax, or e-mail at least one month in advance to ensure that samples are processed in a timely fashion. 607-266-8965, 607-266-8963 (fax), or johneslab@cornell.edu.
For possible exceptions to these rules, call Monica Carey at 607-266-8965.
Fill AHDC container at least 1/2 full with manure taken directly from rectum.
Other containers must be clean; add 1/2 handful or 15 pellets of feces and seal tightly.
Use new plastic glove for each sample to preclude cross-contamination.
Put no more than 25 containers in sturdy plastic bag; then place one or more bags in shipping container.
Ship on freezer packs without delay (do not freeze or refrigerate samples).

Serology
For submission of Bovine sera for Johnes Kela, advance notification of Animal Health Diagnostic Center is required for herd testing of more than 300 animals.
For Johne's AGID Herd testing, please call Monica Carey (607-266-8965) to schedule herd or flocks over 20 animals.

Johne's Kinetic ELISA (KELA) with Johne's Culture (Fecal) follow-up
Johne's Kinetic ELISA (KELA) results will be available 2 - 4 days after submission of serum samples.
Animals needing confirmatory fecal testing will be clearly indicated on the report of KELA results.
Schedule submission of confirmatory fecal samples to arrive at AHDC 4-6 weeks after receipt of KELA results.
Follow ALL submission criteria for fecal samples as stated in previous section.
For additional information concerning Johne's testing please review Appendix G of the Test & Fee Schedule
